Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Janet Stevens. Holiday House, $14.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-8234-0608-1
There have been countless retellings of this classic but this new entry into the crowded field may well become a favorite. The narrative is pleasingly faithful to the basic plot elements, and Stevens's humorous watercolor paintings are a bit more colorful than her usual work. The bears have clearly defined personalities and funny (yet still bearlike) facial expressions and mannerisms. Their house is comfortable and pleasantly messy. Goldilocks's cute chubby cheeks and blond mop of hair are a bit reminiscent of the heroine of Disney's Alice in Wonderland. Baby bear is particularly childlike with his blue overalls, white sneakers and preschoolerish facial expressions. The pivotal scene when Goldilocks faces the bears is a wonderfully detailed tableau. Great fun. (2-6)
