Gr 1-4-These series entries feature full-page color photographs facing a large-print paragraph of one to three sentences. The texts focus on the individuals' lives as athletes and include, where deemed necessary, basic facts about the sports as well. The Jeter biography introduces his high school career in baseball and basketball, the Yankees' World Series victories, and facts about his position as shortstop. The Williams book discusses her rapid movements as a player, the size of her racquet, and her ability to jump for the ball, as well as mentioning her famous hairstyle. In the de la Hoya title, readers learn that the boxer grew up in Mexico but now lives in the United States; that he punches with both hands, using gloves; that he competed in the Olympics; and so forth. The brevity of the texts (well under 200 words each) is designed to insure reading success for new and/or struggling readers. These books should be very popular.
