CHARACTER WITNESS: How Our Lives Can Make a Difference in Evangelism
Christine Wood, J. P. Moreland, . . InterVarsity, $12 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-8308-2378-9
Writing in an area overpopulated with many "quick fix" solutions, Wood, author of the discipleship curriculum Life Design, offers a remarkably different approach to the task of evangelism. Believing that "the key to effective evangelism is a relationship that enjoys a pleasing exchange of truth and trust," Wood focuses on developing "relational qualities" rather than learning a prepackaged evangelism program. Each chapter explores one of these character qualities: a Christian should be intentional, gracious, focused, pure in heart, buoyant, wise, patient, empathetic, reflective, insightful, hospitable, creative and consistent. While not giving a one-size-fits-all formula for evangelism, Wood provides clear direction for improvement in these areas. Questions at the end of each chapter will help readers incorporate the material into their own lives. Perhaps the most winsome parts of this very balanced and "grace-full" book are the stories of relational evangelism from the author's own life. In a stunning departure from the usual pattern, most of her stories do not end in conversion. Actually, the stories do not end at all; they tell of years of ongoing friendship and the sharing of differences. The authentic nature of Wood's friendships, her honesty about disappointments and frustrations, and the thoughtful, creative, loving approach she demonstrates will provide an inspiring and challenging model for many Christians who are frustrated with more programmatic approaches to this important task.
