Art of the 60's & 70's
Rizzoli, E. Knight, Christopher Knight. Rizzoli International Publications, $60 (271pp) ISBN 978-0-8478-0916-5
A catalogue of the art collection of Milanese businessman and collector Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, this glitzy showcase concentrates on minimalist sculpture, conceptual and installation art, and abstract expressionism. In a lengthy interview with Knight, art critic for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, Panza makes extravagant claims for some of his favorite contemporary artists, among them Robert Ryman, Dan Flavin, Richard Serra and Bruce Nauman. The first half of the album spotlights works by these and other talents, including Rothko, Oldenburg, Lichtenstein, Rauschenberg and Jean Fautrier, whose mixed-media paintings resemble paleolithic fossils or embryos. The volume's second half, a crowded photodocumentation of Panza's entire collection, includes Franz Kline, Joseph Beuys, Robert Mangold among others. Notes on the individual artists would have been helpful. (July)
