In Turner's Footsteps
David Hill. Salem House Publishers, $21.95 (128pp) ISBN 978-0-88162-103-7
British art historian Hill retraces the path Turner followed during a sketching tour of northern England in the summer of 1816, identifying the sites of the artist's drawings and paintings, and noting that much of the countryside has remained the same since Turner's day. Basing his reconstruction on Turner's journals and letters and his own observations, Hill relates events of that journey, describing the weather, identifying the places Turner stayed, even disclosing the amounts he tipped porters. Maps trace Turner's route and scenic photos are compared with the sketches, displaying the artist's eye for detail. The watercolors Turner created from his sketchesrenderings of castles and abbeys, lush landscapes and turbulent waterfallsare finely reproduced here, completing this splendid Turner/Hill travelogue.
