Winter's Edge
Valerie Miner. Crossing Press, $7.95 (184pp) ISBN 978-0-89594-175-6
Friendship, politics and social consciousness are the issues raised in this story of two elderly women living in San Francisco's Tenderloin district. Chrissie MacInnes and Margaret Sawyer have been close friends for years. Chrissie is the more outspoken and aggressive of the pair, while Margaret takes a passive role in life. A hotly contested local election raises Chrissie's political awareness as she encourages Margaret to be more active in their community. Margaret continues to view the action from the sidelines until an act of violence leaves her no choice but to become directly involved. At the same time, she forms a romantic attachment to an eligible bachelor, placing a strain on her relationship with Chrissie. Depressing at times and certainly no lightweight, this book takes a thought-provoking look at human nature. November
