Whose Shoes Are These?
Ron Roy. Clarion Books, $13.95 (40pp) ISBN 978-0-89919-445-5
In a lively companion to last year's Whose Hat Is That? Roy and Hausherr have again created an interesting and inviting concept book. This time the focus is on shoes20 different typesusing the effective format of their previous book: a photograph shows a pair of shoes (usually juxtaposed with the much smaller feet of a child) and a related question (``Is this boot meant for walking on the moon?''). On the next page a short, informational paragraph (``This is a ski boot. When the four buckles are opened a person's foot can easily slip into the boot.'') is paired with an clear black-and-white photo of the boot or shoe in use. Children are introduced to rubber boots, running shoes, fishermen's waders, sandals, ice skates, flippers, slippers, clogs and toe shoes, among others, in this bold, well-designed book. Ages 4-7.
