Hinterkind: The Waking World
Ian Edginton and Francesco Trifogli. DC/Vertigo, $10 trade paper (144p) ISBN 978-1-4012-4518-4
Following an event called the Blight, the world is reverting to a “before mankind” state—cities are being overrun by unmowed lawns and worse, and the Hinterkind, a host of supernatural creatures, have returned to their lawful place running things. In this bizarre world, teens Prosper and Angus are trying to survive and solve various mysteries—such as why Angus now has a tail. This book wastes no time in getting the story started, and Edginton (Victorian Undead) continues to thrust his leads into peril after peril among the ruins. Where needed, the role of exposition is often fulfilled by villains’ rambling monologues between battle scenes. Angus turns out to have some connection with the Hinterkind; Prosper secures the book’s place in the ever-popular female-warrior-with-bow-and-arrow-struggles-for-survival-in-a-dystopian-world genre. In his first major comics work, artist Trifogli showcases a knack for drawing offbeat creatures, and, aided by colorist Cris Peter, succeeds in creating a vibrant world for these breakneck adventures.
