Soul’s Gate
James L. Rubart. Thomas Nelson, $15.99 trade paper (400p) ISBN 978-1-4016-8605-5
By his own admission, the author is taking the spiritual warfare novel up a few notches from his previous book (Rooms) with a plot that involves entering and warring for the souls of other people and showing the path to spiritual freedom. References in the story line to sci-fi movies helps tie biblical references to bending time and space in order to enter souls. A trio of young people follows a wounded leader named Reece to a retreat in the mountains where he teaches them how to be warriors for souls and how to enter souls to set them free. The three must overcome their own demons, as must Reece, on the way to the final lesson. Readers with high blood pressure or heart conditions be warned: this is a seriously heart-thumping and satisfying read that goes to the edge, jumps off, and “builds wings on the way down.” (Nov.)
