National Geographic Kids Bird Guide of North America
Jonathan Alderfer. National Geographic, $15.95 paper (176p) ISBN 978-1-4263-1094-2
Alderfer offers in-depth studies of 60 birds native to North America (plus “mini-profiles” of another 60 specimens) in a guide for nascent birders that’s fairly bursting with information. The book is organized by region, and each bird’s spread offers sharp color photographs, “vital statistics” (including its call, diet, and habitat), maps of where it can be found, and other background (“During a dive, the pelican folds back its wings so they won’t break, and hits the water bill-first”). Tips on building bird feeders, nests, and baths are also included; readers looking to better understand American birds from coast to coast won’t be disappointed. Ages 7–9. (Mar.)
