Raven Heights Manor
Sharol Louise. Five Star Publishing, $25.95 (244p) ISBN 978-1-4328-2940-7
Set in the late 18th century, this derivative debut mystery from Louise (Secret Sister) offers little sense of menace. Claire Temple, a 15-year-old orphan, leaves school at the request of Sir Rudyard, an uncle she’s never met, to come live with him at Raven Heights Manor in Cornwall. But why is Sir Rudyard not there to greet her? Indeed, he may not return for a month or so, according to the housekeeper, Mrs. Dawson, who warns her not to walk on the cliff path, from which a girl, Zillah, recently fell to her death. Exploring the neighborhood, the bookish Claire meets the brothers Roman and Vitus. It appears
one is good and one evil—but which is which? She also befriends Alice, a blind girl who lives with the self-effacing Miss Bethany. Once Claire discovers a clue left by Zillah, it’s clear that she will, indeed, explore the cliff path—at her peril. Hopefully, the author will better balance action and description in any sequel.
