Sophie and the Heidelberg Cat
Andrew Wilson, illus. by Helena Perez Garcia. Crossway, $12.99 (36p) ISBN 978-1-433564-18-5
Sophie is in the midst of emotional upheaval after a series of quarrels with her family. Then the neighbors’ cat appears at her window and speaks to her. Taken aback, the girl guiltily tells the cat everything, adding, “And worst of all, I’ve even upset God! And the Bible says that means I’m really bad.” The cat invites her for a walk, where they discuss the entity’s intent for humankind toward goodness, kindness, and obedience. They discuss the difficulty in maintaining strength of character: “Hope doesn’t come from the good things we do. It comes as a gift, from what Jesus has done.” Back matter includes a note to parents about the doctrines put forth by the Heidelberg Catechism, which directly inspired the conversation between Sophie and the cat. An inventive resource for families seeking ways to speak to their children about a Christian theological mainstay. Ages 5–6. (Sept.)
