The Bro Code for Parents: What to Expect When You’re Awesome
Barney Stinson with Matt Kuhn, read by Neil Patrick Harris. Simon & Schuster Audio, unabridged, two CDs, 2.5 hrs., $14.99 ISBN 978-1-4423-5966-6
Barney Stinson, the fictional character from TV’s How I Met Your Mother, delivers the down low on the pitfalls and perils of parenthood, insuring that no sensible man will ever want to procreate again. Stinson explains all the dreadful experiences and lost opportunities that plague every parent, from conception to paying for college. Neil Patrick Harris—who plays Stinson on the show—turns in an energetic performance that makes this audio edition all the more genuine and playful. Harris ably embodies Stinson, capturing his egotism, arrogance, and trademark chauvinism, and providing some good laughs along the way. A little Stinson goes a long way, however. As a part of an ensemble cast, the character is not always the center of attention—which may be for the best. Listeners may find more than two hours of direct exposure to Stinson trying, especially as the jokes become more predictable and pack less of a punch. A Touchstone paperback. (Oct.)
