Animal Spots and Stripes
Britta Teckentrup. Chronicle/Handprint, $12.99 (18p) ISBN 978-1-4521-0994-7
This interactive board book features various striped and spotted animals, while cutaway flaps integrated into the digital collage art conceal an animal with the other patterning. Four “spotted dogs” run along a green grove of trees, and beneath a tree-shaped flap is a red and orange “striped cat.” Wide-eyed lemurs make the acquaintance of a spotted snake, and while three spotted frogs rest on lily pads, another leaps to slurp up a “striped bug.” The chameleons featured in the final spread, break the interactive pattern and demonstrate that spots and stripes are not mutually exclusive. A clean design, peek-a-boo windows die-cut into the flaps, and cheerful depictions of the animals make this a diverting introduction to some basic patterns and wildlife. Available simultaneously: Animal 123. Ages 2–4. (Mar.)
