Listeners looking for a good scare will find thrills and chills aplenty in this breakneck tale of terror that is much enhanced by narrator Phil Gigante. Sara and Martin Randhurst have devoted themselves to helping teenagers who have run afoul of the law. During an overnight outing to a small island near Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Martin engages in the age-old tradition of telling ghost stories. But soon fiction becomes terrifying reality, and with Sara and Martin missing, their charges must battle for survival and face off against unimaginable horrors. Gigante magnificently conveys the characters’ fear and the book’s suspense, while distinctively portraying a wide variety of characters. His performance is a perfect example of a narrator elevating an author’s work. Without background music or special effects, Gigante turns what could have been a clichéd, gory battle for survival into an enthralling listen. A CreateSpace paperback. (June)
