A Parade of Puppies
Charles Ghigna, illus. by Kristi Bridgeman. Orca, $9.95 (26p) ISBN 978-1-4598-0963-5
In a warmhearted follow-up to 2015’s A Carnival of Cats, a rosy-cheeked boy is delighted by one dog after another during a walk with his mother. As in the previous book, the puppies are first seen peering through small square boxes, framed by swirls, hearts, balloon animals, and other decorations. Turning the page reveals the identity of each dog and completes Ghigna’s rhyme (“Here comes a puppy with little legs./ A big-eyed Dachshund who barks and begs!”). Eventually, the boy finds a frisky gray puppy of his own at the local animal shelter, subtly hinting where readers might look for a pet. A joyful love of dogs big and small shines from the cozy artwork and cheery verse. Up to age 3. (Aug.)
