Relentless in Texas
Kari Lynn Dell. Sourcebooks Casablanca, $7.99 mass market (448p) ISBN 978-1-4926-5817-7
The muddled sixth romance in Dell’s Texas Rodeo series (after Mistletoe in Texas) delivers on earthy western atmosphere, but disappoints with a frustrating central pairing. Gil Sanchez is a recovered addict and former Texas rodeo star, who, after a career-ending injury, now funnels his energy into the family trucking business. When Gil travels to Montana, a chance meeting with healer Carmelita White Fox leads to a single blistering kiss and an exchange of phone numbers. Despite their initial chemistry, Gil and Carma struggle to communicate across the distance, texting each other GIFs instead of confessing their feelings. Then Carma arrives unexpectedly in Gil’s hometown of Earnest, Tex., to research equine therapy facilities in hopes of opening her own. But even reunited, Gil and Carma fail to express their emotions, seemingly happy to discuss their relationship with anyone but each other. When Gil is offered a miraculous final shot at rodeo glory, Carma agrees to help out, and the two must learn to balance their careers, family obligations, and budding romance. Gil’s return to the rodeo provides much-needed momentum, but Carma’s willingness to sacrifice her plans for Gil strikes a sour note. This is a rare misfire from Dell.
