A well-written heroine elevates Rushdan’s second Final Hour novel (after Every Last Breath) above similar black-ops romantic thrillers. Computer programmer and cryptologist Willow Harper relies on routine and repetition to help her focus on her job at Grey Box, a top-secret agency, and care for her ill father at home. Then she’s framed for executing a suspect within Grey Box’s own offices. Field agent Gideon Stone takes her on the run, putting her completely out of her comfort zone. Together, they must evade the organization that arranged the execution and the framing while staying ahead of their former employers, who want to recover both Gideon and Willow for questioning. Finding untapped wells of grit, Willow proves able to keep up with Gideon, who appreciates her when she’s both unfiltered and unsure, and a powerful connection develops between them. Rushdan delivers plenty of spycraft and action to satisfy suspense fans, as well as believable romance between an anxious autistic woman and a widower battling demons of his own.
