Rainbow Boy and the Pride Parade
Taylor Rouanzion, illus. by Stacey Chomiak. Beaming, $17.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-5064-9005-2
After a boy forgoes wearing “my pink tutu, or my green mermaid tail, or my purple cape,” explaining to Mommy that he dislikes how “they make me different,” she and Daddy take him to “a place where everyone is a rainbow”—a Pride parade. Observational counting text chronicles what the child sees, from “ONE grand marshal” to “FOUR boys in sparkly dresses” to “TEN colorful flags.” Chomiak’s stipple-textured illustrations relay joyful character expressions and exuberant movement across people of various abilities, body types, and skin tones, while Rouanzion presents the boy’s first-person perceptions in declarative sentences, often followed by moments of positive emotion or connection. It’s a warm concept title about gaining “more pride than I could ever possibly count.” Ages 3–6. (May)
