The Sea Among Us: The Amazing Strait of Georgia
Edited by Richard Beamish and Gordon McFarlane. Harbour Publishing, $39.95 (384p) ISBN 978-1-55017-683-4
Scientific researchers Beamish and McFarlane build a case for the increased stewardship of the Strait of Georgia in their study of this inland sea located on Canada's west coast. Sandwiched between mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island, the strait is home to the giant Pacific octopus, century-old geoduck clams, and the densest population of harbor seals in the world. As well, more than two million people live along its shores; the population is expected to increase by 50% during the next few decades. Beamish and McFarlane, along with a team of expert contributors, provide a comprehensive look at the strait from historical, anthropological, and biological perspectives. Particular consideration is given to the ways in which humans adversely affect the strait; an afterword, "The Future," outlines the contributors' hopes and predictions for this ecosystem. The inclusion of tables and graphs, as well as the exhaustive and academic approach, make this work of most value to educators, scientists, and others with an already well-established interest in British Columbia's marine life. Those expecting lighter coffee-table book fare will, nevertheless, enjoy many full color photos and come away with an appreciation of the breathtaking diversity of wildlife found here and the need for its protection.
