How many lies does it take to make a truth? A whole bunch, according to this playfully-executed Regency by the author of Impulse. To fulfill her grandfather's dying wish that she be married, confirmed spinster Camilla Ferrand, hires Lord Rawdon, aka Benedict Ellsworth, to pose as her fiance while she visits the family estate in Chevington Park. Since the guise will allow him the opportunity to investigate rumors that a French spy is lurking among the villagers, Benedict willing agrees. Upon their arrival, Camilla and Benedict are mistakenly announced as newlyweds, which leads to a comedy of errors, a shared bedroom, and plenty of sexual tension. As Benedict searches for his traitor, it become obvious that the spy is someone residing at Chevington Park. Oddball characters and misadventures are plentiful in this delightful romp, making it one of Camp's best. (Nov.)
