In Search of Kinship: Modern Pioneering on the Western Landscape
Page Lambert. Fulcrum Group, $23.95 (272pp) ISBN 978-1-55591-266-6
Descendants of pioneers, the author, her husband, Mark, and their two children left five generations of ranching tradition in Colorado to put down new roots in Wyoming. Lambert's deep and abiding love of the land shines in these essays, many of which are reprinted from Reader's Digest, the Christian Science Monitor and other publications. She writes about Romie, her aging saddle horse, family pets, livestock and local wildlife. Lambert is critical of environmental activists, stoutly defending ranching as a way of life. There are stories of an aborted foal, the death of a faithful dog, the birth of twin calves and of children learning to accept the rhythms of life and death on the ranch. The final essay is a hymn of praise to Wyoming, where the Lamberts are now firmly rooted. (May)
