The Prizefighters: An Intimate Look at Champions and Contenders
Arlene Schulman. Lyons and Burford Publishers, $27.95 (176pp) ISBN 978-1-55821-309-8
Journalist-photojournalist Schulman approaches her subjects with affection and admiration for the exceedingly difficult career they have chosen or that, in some cases, has chosen them. She writes of gyms and other training facilities and of famed boxers she has interviewed, from Archie Moore and Sugar Ray Robinson to Larry Holmes, plus a host of others. But in some of her most effective shots she turns her camera on youngsters who dream of fame and money in the ring. Of greatest interest is Schulman's talk with the retired, articulate Moore, who makes keen observations on the Sweet Science. The lively, engrossing text and the 100 black-and-white photos are outstanding. (Oct.)
