Where Are You?

A little dog, shopping in the supermarket with his grandfather, catches a whiff of cupcakes and impulsively takes off in pursuit of his quarry; the two spend the rest of the book looking for one another. Readers will be more successful than the grandfather at finding Harry the dog, not much bigger than a cupcake himself, in Melling's (previously teamed with Simon for What's That Noise?) deft cartoon illustrations: sharp eyes will find the winsome hero, with a Snoopy-like nose and a spot over one eye, in the bustling, softly colorful aisles of the grocery store. One humorous scene shows Harry from above, with the looming shadow of a stand of pastries falling over his minute form. The straightforward story deals reassuringly with the fear of being lost, but such visual touches transform this brief tale into a charmer. Ages 2-6. (Aug.)
