Something's Coming!
Richard Edwards. Candlewick Press (MA), $9.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-1-56402-613-2
At the start of Edwards's (Moles Can Dance) sweet snippet of a story, a stuffed elephant, frog and rabbit are tucked into a drawer in the room of a sleeping child. When Elephant suddenly sits up and announces, ""Something's coming!"" his companions try to tell him he's wrong. But Elephant knows better. Climbing out of the drawer, the trio futilely searches the silent house for clues. In an I-told-you-so mood, Little Rabbit at last declares, ""Nothing's coming."" And then ``something'' indeed comes-from Elephant's trunk, a sneeze so mighty that it propels his friends clear across the room. After a second, even larger sneeze, the three return to their drawer and fall back asleep. Kubick's effectively grainy pastel crayon art gives these stuffed animal characters a fetching, cuddly quality. Of special charm are Elephant's changeable facial expressions-and his dapper sailor suit. Ages 2-up. (Aug.)
