How to Rate a Cat: Rate Any Feline Friend from Their Boopable Nose to Their Sweet Toe Beans

Matthew McGlasson. Rock Point, $18 trade paper (144p) ISBN 978-1-57715-492-1

“Skillz,” “cattitude,” and “boopableness” are just some of the feline qualities considered by veterinarian and social media personality McGlasson in this sweet if sometimes cloying debut. Based on his popular TikTok series, the book applies McGlasson’s generous cat rating system—“a scale from 1 to 10” on which “you are not allowed to rate a cat lower than 10”—to a lengthy list of follower-submitted cats, alongside the author’s pithy commentary. Before delving into the cat ratings, McGlasson lays out some of his assessments of cat body parts and behaviors, many of which will be unintelligible to those not perpetually online, such as “peets,” which can come in “smol,” “socks,” or “clickety-clackers.” The evaluations themselves range from amusing (“Screaming for attention is one way to get adopted”) to a little too intense (“I just want to crunch and munch on those Doritos ears”) to rather generic (“Brunswick is the goodest boi. Ever”). The book’s adoring descriptions of the individual cats and their many idiosyncrasies, such as croissant-loving Bubbles or 24.5-year-old China, who “runs the household with an iron paw,” stand out more than McGlasson’s comedic commentary. This becomes even more touching in a concluding section, entitled “Fighters,” featuring rescued, ill, and special-needs kitties, all of which tug at the heartstrings. It’s a sincere and silly celebration of cats and their lovable quirks. (Mar.)
