Finding First Words and More!
Libby Walden, illus. by Fhiona Galloway. Tiger Tales, $12.99 (12p) ISBN 978-1-58925-218-9
In this large-format board book, more than 200 words—many of which are hidden under flaps—are integrated into playful scenes featuring anthropomorphic animals. In busy scenes reminiscent of Richard Scarry’s work, Galloway shows the animals involved in common activities including playing at a playground, eating lunch, riding in various vehicles, and getting dressed. In the vehicle-themed spread, lifting the flaps identifies a train, hot-air balloon, and helicopter, as well as the color of each one; the getting-dressed scene, meanwhile, incorporates descriptive adjectives for different articles of clothing (“floaty skirt,” “soft shirt”). While not particularly distinctive, Galloway’s brightly colored, crisp-edged digital illustrations create a friendly and inviting environment, and the range of settings offers a solid overview of a child’s world, from jump ropes and French fries to squirrels and sneakers. Ages 2–5. (Mar.)
