Leo All Alone

In one of four additions to the Pet Rescue Adventures series, eight-year-old Evie gains a Westie puppy named Leo and a baby brother, Sam, whose arrival means that Leo is soon being neglected by the whole family. Williams’s intermittent pencil sketches strike some unsettling notes, with the characters’ blackened eyes making them look oddly sinister at times. Webb’s narration, though, gives voice to lonely Leo’s thoughts (“Everyone else had eaten, and he was starving”), helping readers recognize, alongside Evie’s family, the substantial responsibility involved in caring for a pet.
