Bodyfoods for Busy People
Jane Clarke. McBooks Press, $24.95 (160pp) ISBN 978-1-59013-134-3
Popular UK nutritionist and food writer Clarke (Bodyfoods Cookbook, Yummy!) offers a sane and practical guide to better nutrition for those on the go in this well-balanced compilation of recipes and nutritional advice. Eschewing fads like low-fat and high-protein diets, Clarke advises readers to exercise moderation and eat a wide range of foods, paying more attention to the health benefits of a particular food than counting fat grams or calories. While this approach is nothing new, Clarke provides clear, blessedly brief explanations as to why nutrients matter, and bolsters her arguments, point by point, with simple, fresh recipes that highlight particular ingredients, such as her Mango, Lime and Raspberry Juice (which provides a boost of beta carotene and vitamin C) and her high-fiber, whole grain Favorite Oatcakes. In addition to simple, tasty recipes, Clarke provides tips on takeout and restaurants eating, and includes an extensive section on ""therapies,"" covering everything from coping with jet lag to calming indigestion, lowering cholesterol and boosting fertility. Clarke's sensible, well-rounded take on nutrition is a welcome voice of reason in an field dominated by dubious cure-alls.
