The Argentine Triangle

Allan Topol. SelectBooks (www.selectbooks.com), $16.95 trade paper (320p) ISBN 978-1-59079-141-7

This humdrum contemporary thriller takes Craig Page, the CIA assassin who starred in Topol’s trilogy that concluded with 2013’s The Russian Endgame, to Argentina. There fellow CIA agent Ted Dunn, a friend of Page’s, has disappeared while gathering information on Gen. Alfredo Estrada, who’s plotting to seize power. Page, who has left the CIA and surgically altered his appearance, agrees to go along with agency director Betty Richards’s plan to infiltrate Estrada’s operation, posing as the head of a large equity group considering investing in Argentina. Meanwhile, Edward Bryce, a powerful adviser to the U.S. president and Page’s nemesis, has fallen under the spell of Gina Galindo, a reporter for the Buenos Aires daily La Nación, and is arranging huge arms shipments to Argentina. When Page’s cover is blown, he has to rely on unusual allies to stay alive and to help him thwart Estrada’s grandiose schemes. Readers should be prepared for routine prose and predictable plotting. Agent: Pam Ahearn, Ahearn Agency. (Apr.)
