Five plump rabbits peer out of the die-cut hole on the cover of this square book (which parents might liken to an old 45-rpm record sleeve, with the rabbits' ears pointing to the center). "This hole is too crowded," the bunnies agree. In the opening spread, they all squeeze into the hole's opening on the right-hand page, while a bunnyless hole appears on the left-hand side, suggesting roomier accommodations. As readers flip the pages, layer by layer, another rabbit reappears in the spacious digs next door, leaving its companions behind. First, "Chubby hopped out of the hole, across the field, and into the empty hole. 'Big,' said Chubby."
