When Will Fall Arrive?
Sanne Miltenburg. Clavis, $16.95 (32p) ISBN 978-1-60537-318-8
Just as bedtime can’t be postponed forever, neither can hibernation, as Bunny learns in this sweet-natured story from Dutch author-illustrator Miltenburg (The Daddy Store). Bunny is dismayed to discover that his friend Hedgehog will start hibernating when autumn leaves turn red. Bunny reasons that if he hides the red leaves as they appear, Hedgehog won’t realize that fall has started, but his friend just gets sleepier and sleepier. Miltenburg’s cheery illustrations humorously emphasize the futility of Bunny’s plan (orange and yellow leaves fill the trees overhead; Hedgehog can’t keep his eyes open as the two play cards), but Bunny’s devotion to his friend is evident throughout. The narrative and dialogue can get long-winded at times, but it’s a minor snag in a story that warmly reveals that acting in a friend’s best interest sometimes requires a little personal sacrifice. Ages 4–up. (Aug.)
