My Mommy Is a Hero
Hannah Tolson. Kane Miller, $12.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-61067-721-9
In a heartening picture book, Tolson honors mothers in the armed forces. The rhymed lines have a smooth, easy cadence: “My mommy is a hero,/ her strength amazes me./ She dives into the ocean,/ to rescue those at sea.” Tolson’s friendly images show the figures in daring circumstances (jumping from planes), or serving communities (a medic listens to a child’s chest with a stethoscope). Back home, their children are seen writing letters and thinking of their loved ones (“My mommy is a hero,/ leading others every day./ I know she’s always with me,/ even when she’s far away”). Tolson suggests that sharing in an enlisted parent’s pride can make them feel a little closer when they are far away. Also available: My Daddy Is a Hero. Ages 3–7.[em] (Mar.)
