It’s the Middle Class, Stupid!
James Carville and Stan Greenberg, read by the authors. Penguin Audio, unabridged, six CDs, 7 hrs., $29.95 ISBN 978-1-61176-114-6
Prominent political strategists James Carville and Stan Greenberg depict the detrimental impact of modern politics on the middle class. The pair argues that the status quo in Washington—for both Republicans and Democrats—is a failure. The authors point out that the current political system has allowed CEOs’ incomes to skyrocket and enabled corporate bigwigs to line their pockets instead of allocating increased revenue to employees. In the end, both Carville and Greenberg argue that to return America to prosperity, the financial gap between the wealthy and the middle class must be reduced. In this audio edition, Carville and Greenberg read alternating sections. Of the two, Carville is a more magnetic performer—something that isn’t surprising given his work as a television commentator and occasional appearance in movies. Greenberg’s reading is less polished; he sometimes runs his words together and has issues with enunciation. Nonetheless, political junkies will find this a compelling and entertaining assessment of what is wrong in America and what might fix the country. A Penguin/Blue Rider hardcover. (July)
