Flashfire: A Parker Novel
Richard Stark, read by Mark Peckham. AudioGO, unabridged, six CDs, 7.25 hrs., $29.95 ISBN 978-1-62064-438-6
In this installment of Stark’s Parker series, the inimitalbe detective finds himself chasing jewel thieves in West Palm Beach, Fla., only to end up fighting for his life when everything go awry. In this audio edition, narrator Mark Peckham delivers an underwhelming performance, reading with a steady pace and tone that match the novel, but fail to draw listeners into the story. Peckham treads the water, never losing himself in any of the colorful characters that pop up throughout the book. The result is a lackluster production—and for some, listening may even become a chore, particularly when all hope appears to be lost for Parker, and Peckham fails to alter his delivery in any meaningful way. A University of Chicago paperback. (Jan.)
