Dream a Little Dream

Melissa Brayden. Bold Strokes, $19.95 trade paper (264p) ISBN 978-1-63679-839-4

In this adorable second-chance romance, Brayden (When You Smile) gets cozy small-town aesthetics just right. When Savanna Potter, manager of the independent grocery in the beach town of Dreamer’s Bay, S.C., goes to a conference in Charleston in preparation for turning her late aunt’s home into an Airbnb, an unexpected encounter leads to an amazing night with medical resident Kyle Remington. Kyle, knowing she’s too busy to sustain a relationship but as unwilling as Savanna to walk away from their connection, proposes they reunite on Charleston’s suspension bridge in exactly one year. When the date comes, however, Kyle fails to show, leaving Savanna devastated. Then, just as she’s beginning to recover, Kyle shows up to do a stint in Dreamer’s Bay’s tiny hospital. She’s eager to make amends, but Savanna is slow to warm to the idea of risking her heart again. Though some secondary story lines, including Savanna’s discovery that she doesn’t know who her biological father is, feel jarringly heavy against the rest of the plot’s lightness, the core connection between the women is sexy and sweet, and their gossipy but supportive community adds charm. Brayden is good at what she does. (May)
