Beasts

Ingvild Bjerkeland, trans. from the Norwegian by Rosie Hedger. Levine Querido, $17.99 (128p) ISBN 978-1-64614-513-3

Norwegian siblings navigate a treacherous landscape following the invasion of humanoid beasts that slaughter indiscriminately in this atmospheric and harrowing horror novel, Bjerkeland’s English-language debut. Ever since their mother’s death, 13-year-old Abdi and five-year-old Alva have struggled to survive, scavenging as they seek the purported safety of a seafaring escape via the port of Djupevik. They hope to find their father, last seen on an island in the North Sea. But the beasts aren’t the only things they have to worry about: they must also contend with sickness and ruthless human predators. Terrifying monsters of unexplained origin and enigmatic nature prove relentless forces of destruction within the present-day narrative, which unfolds alongside flashbacks that reveal more of the events surrounding the early days of the crisis and society’s collapse. Throughout, Bjerkeland touches on themes of trauma and desperation for survival, while also showcasing the peoples’ resilience and optimism for the future. Though the resolution leaves many questions unanswered, readers will enjoy the quick pacing and postapocalyptic Odyssey feel of this brief but powerful tale. Ages 10–14. (Apr.)
