Behind You

A woman is forced to relive her teenage trauma in the startling latest from Omer (Please Tell Me). On Halloween night in 2010, bullied high schooler Theodora Briggs crashes a party hosted by her tormenter, Victoria, with a knife in her pocket. By the end of the night, Victoria is dead and Theo’s only memory is of being chased through the woods. The next day, Theo runs away from home. Thirteen years later, she has changed her name, launched a successful career as a hairdresser, and started a family in Chicago. One day, a stranger walks into her shop and asks for her by name, then suggests he knows that she’s a killer. Rattled, Theo rushes home, only to be bombarded by threats of violence from anonymous internet users who’ve managed to track her down. When her family also starts receiving online threats, Theo returns to her hometown to flush out the source of the attacks. There’s some dubious logic at play—Theo’s memories of the fateful night surface gradually, and conveniently, as the harassment ramps up—but Omer delivers some truly surprising twists in the final act.
