Last Dream of Her Mortal Soul: Portland Hafu, Book 3
K Bird Lincoln. World Weaver, $13.95 trade paper (200p) ISBN 978-1-73225-464-0
Series heroine Koi, who can enter and manipulate other people’s dreams, comes into her own in Lincoln’s capable third urban fantasy. Immediately following the events of Black Pearl Dreaming, Kwaskwi, head of the Portland Kind in Portland, Ore., calls Koi back from Japan. A powerful member of the Portland Kind has been murdered, and Kwaskwi wants Koi to repay her debt to him by using her powers to help track down the killers. Antagonist identities are easy to guess at as it becomes clear that one of the Portland Kind has betrayed them to the most terrifying dragon yet: a Grand Dragon of a white supremacist group called the Nordvast Uffheim. Lincoln’s convincing merger of myth and culture from around the Northern Hemisphere creates a strong contrast with the Nordvast Uffheim’s bigotry. The ongoing themes of dreams and dragons sometimes feel a little muddled, but series fans will enjoy watching Koi learn to control her abilities and sort out her romantic life along the way. (Mar.)
