Bunny Made Tea

Amanda Baehr Fuller. Owlkids, $18.95 (32p) ISBN 978-1-77147-681-2

This debut by Baehr Fuller makes the most of play between innocent text and sly illustration as textural artwork reveals stylish, retro-esque forms in a quiet palette of tertiary shades. When “Bunny wanted tea,” a white rabbit with oversize ears and liquid eyes gathers blooms for the drink. Back at home, the rabbit empties the petals into a teapot and is just pouring out when Opossum, seemingly innocent and inquisitive, appears at the snug burrow’s opening. A backward glance from Bunny reveals dismay, plus realization that the planned solitary cup of tea won’t be happening. Indeed, good hospitality prevails: “Opossum wanted tea. Opossum drank tea.” But “Bunny still wanted tea” and tries again, gathering berries and leaves and brewing another pot—just as Opossum appears anew, its young ones riding atop (“Opossum’s babies wanted tea”). Only readers see Bunny’s exasperated side-eye as the family appears, but a kind gesture by an observant possum child restores Bunny’s faith and good mood. In this spare domestic drama, efforts made to extend generosity result in communal kindness—and, at last, a good cup of tea. Ages 3–6. (Feb.)
