Future’s Edge
Gareth L. Powell. Titan, $17.99 trade paperback (320p) ISBN 978-1-80336-863-4
Powell (Embers of War) has humanity on the brink of extinction in this rip-roaring space opera. An alien essence infected archaeologist Ursula just before aliens attacked and destroyed Earth. Now she’s one of the few survivors scattered throughout the galaxy, operating a bar at the far end of traveled space and holding out hope that her lover, Jack, is alive and on his way to find her. He finally shows up after two years as the captain of a warship there to recruit Ursula for the recovery of the very alien artifact that infected her, hoping to use it as a weapon against their extraterrestrial enemy. Ursula joins Jack and his battle-weary crew as they travel through deep space and face painful choices about how much they’re willing to sacrifice to save humankind. The result is a page-turning adventure for sci-fi fans who don’t mind tangled relationships and gruesome fights. The resolution feels a bit too tidy but offers plenty of hope for those who enjoy happy endings. Powell’s fans will not be disappointed. (Feb.)
