Dinosaurs! Pop-Up Paper Designs
David Hawcock. Tango (IPG/Trafalgar Sq., dist.), $14.99 (16p) ISBN 978-1-85707-804-6
Three-dimensional versions of eight familiar dinosaurs—triceratops, velociraptor, stegosaurus, archaeopteryx, brachiosaurus, diplodocus, ankylosaurus, and tyrannosaurus—feature in this small-format pop-up book. Marbled paper textures and simple backdrops suggested by the spiky silhouettes of leaves and crowds give the book a clean aesthetic, and Hawcock doesn’t overwhelm the pages with information either; readers learn the pronunciation and meaning of each dinosaur’s name, as well as its habitat, diet, and a few bulleted facts (ankylosaurus was “one of the last dinosaurs to die out”). The pop-ups have a pleasing sense of movement as they emerge, and the polished presentation should whet readers’ appetites for future dinosaur explorations. Ages 3–5. (Sept.)
