Sleeping Beauty: A Pop-up Book
Louise Rowe. Tango (IPG/Trafalgar Sq., dist.), $18.99 (14p) ISBN 978-1-85707-826-8
This stylish retelling of the Brothers Grimm's "Briar Rose" joins Rowe's earlier adaptations of "Hansel and Gretel" and "Little Red Riding Hood." The six pop-up spreads are a mix of handsome interior and exterior scenes, and the muted palette of brick red, brown, and pale green echoes the somberness of a story built around a curse. The retelling doesn't avoid dark details (tangled in the thorns outside the castle, many princes "were unable to free themselves and died a miserable death"), but a verdant wedding scene gives Sleeping Beauty and her prince their happily ever after.
