Creatures work behind the scenes to sustain an elderly couple’s garden in Adele’s cozy tale. White-haired, pink-skinned Mabel enjoys working the plot: “She loved the animals that would visit.... In return, the animals loved Mabel.” But after an ambulance suddenly departs with the woman, the garden rapidly falls into disrepair until a devoted mouse family’s mother comes to the rescue, rallying a motley group of creatures to turn the space around. From autumn to spring, the crew quietly harvest veggies, make a planting plan, clear weeds, and sow seeds. While Mabel’s downcast partner, Stan, initially fails to notice their efforts, the animals’ collective project eventually succeeds in improving his mood. Earthy-toned digital and watercolor artwork creates a homey atmosphere for the friendly-faced cast of animal characters, whose work leads to a honeyed conclusion. Ages 3–6. (Dec.)
