Magic Counting: Explore the World of Numbers Through the Shapes and Patterns Around Us

Nabeel Khan, illus. by Tete Garcia. Scribble US, $16.95 (20p) ISBN 978-1-957363-18-9

Khan and Garcia celebrate numeracy in this wide-ranging exploration of ways that numbers infuse the world with meaning. Counting up from one to 10, a foldout spread devoted to each digit identifies a related shape as well as associated cultural, scientific, spiritual, and symbolic meanings. Introducing the concept of one are a circle (“one whole, perfect shape”) and an ouroboros (“This ancient symbol shows the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth”). A line (which “always travels between two points”) and DNA’s double helix represent two, and triangles and stranded braids point to three. Garcia’s unlined, jewel-tone illustrations take a contemporary graphic style that suits the images’ accompanying captions. Occasional questions (“How many triangles can you count?”) encourage both interactivity and appreciation for the “magic” of numbers. Ages 2–7. (Aug.)
