Foodheim: A Culinary Adventure
Eric Wareheim with Emily Timberlake. Ten Speed, $35 (304p) ISBN 978-1-984858-52-8
Wareheim, half of the comedy duo Tim & Eric, cracks jokes as often as eggs in his rowdy culinary debut. Throughout, the comedian’s voice takes center stage: “Most grandmas are wise as fuck,” reads the introduction, for instance, to a chapter on comfort foods. Even the organization is unorthodox: a chapter on “circle foods” includes the “pork dork,” a round of fried loin cradled between toasted disks of white bread, while pizza is awarded its own section. Though there’s one green smoothie that Wareheim claims cured his allergies, most of this food is, like his cacio e pepe pasta, “deep, dank, [and] creamy.” Recipes are largely straightforward, and, jokes aside, this is a surprisingly informative volume, with a copious section on wine that covers everything from shopping for a bottle to opening Champagne with a saber. Still, there’s no theme beyond what Wareheim (self-dubbed “Heimy”) likes to eat—such as a list of 10 pastas he’s enjoyed in Italy, New York, and Spain. While great fun for existing fans, this may not draw a lot of converts to the “Complete Heimy Experience.” (Sept.)
