She’ll Be Coming ’Round the Mountain

The Classic Folk Sing-Along Songs series kicks off with an endearingly offbeat rendering of the traditional song, “She’ll Be Coming ’Round the Mountain.” Working in screen print–inspired images, Casson takes advantage of the open-ended lyrics, rendering the “she” of the song as an acrobatic figure with long pink hair who wears botanical-print tights and green roller skates and who travels behind six white horses. A child joined by a ragtag group of figures eagerly awaits the woman’s arrival: “We’ll all have chicken and dumplings when she comes.” An end section provides a brief history of the song, which readers can hear performed by Montreal-based music group Sin and Swoon via download.
