Daniel y los Leones = Daniel in the Lions' Den

PreS-Gr 2-Simple, rhyming texts retell the stories of Moses from his birth to his leading the Hebrews out of Egypt, and of Daniel's sojourn in the lions' den. Making good use of assonance, the rhyming text is not insistent but has a pleasing sense of rhythm to it. Lewis's cartoon illustrations, executed in watercolor, are big, bold, and bright, making these good choices for sharing. Her use of the medium is particularly effective in the Moses story, in which she uses large splashes of yellow and red paint to depict the burning bush. The amorphous look is just right. Both Moses and Daniel come across as men of God, interested in supporting others and in doing right. The chapter and verses of the Bible on which the stories are based are given at the end of each book. A solid introduction for the very youngest biblical students, these lighthearted renderings can, depending on the age of the listeners, serve as discussion starters. Sound choices for school and church libraries, as well as bookstores.-Ann Welton, Grant Center for the Expressive Arts, Tacoma, WA
