El Turpial Que Vivio Dos Veces
Salvador Garmendia. Amazonia Solution, $14.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-980-6437-12-8
Gr 2-4-A lovely and unique story that features a bird native to Venezuela. Readers meet the turpial as he hatches and begins to explore the world beyond his nest. One day he is injured by a boy who is playing with a slingshot. The boy takes the bird home and places him in a cage. The long, enforced captivity silences his beautiful song and stills his wings until one day when an errant ray of sunlight fills his heart with joy. The turpial's instinctual and joyous song shames the boy into releasing him from the cage. Tentative at first, the bird finally launches himself into flight as he rediscovers freedom. The eclectic use of charcoal, pastels, and watercolors produces some fascinating artwork that adds visual drama to the story. Highly recommended for all collections, especially those serving a Venezuelan clientele. M.O.B.
