Eek! A Mouse Seek-and-Peek Book
Annie-Sophie Baumann, illus. by Anne-Kathrin Behl. Twirl, $19.99 (18p) ISBN 979-1-02760-192-9
Mouse infestations are seldom cute, but this one manages to be, as several mice make their way through a house, gathering art supplies and other materials for a planned celebration. As the mice move from the basement and kitchen to bathroom and attic, readers can help them open boxes, cans, medicine cabinets, and other objects by lifting flaps, several of which include some very clever touches: a crayon-box lid slides horizontally, as if on tracks, and turning a rotating dial “unlocks” a safe. Squeamish readers might still find a few scenes a little icky—lifting the lid of a pizza box reveals a mouse napping under a bit of arugula, and another mouse holds a contact lens up to its face in the bathroom—but the cheerfully goofy cartoons, the mice’s silly one-liners, and a neat pop-up ending offer lots of amusement. Ages 3–5. (Sept.)
